Dry Eye Syndrome
Dry Eye Syndrome (Dry eye disease) is a frequently encountered eye problem affecting many people globally. Common causes include extended screen time, wearing contact lenses, natural aging, hormonal fluctuations, certain medications, and environmental conditions.
The Causes of Dry Eye Syndrome
Dry Eye Syndrome arises due to insufficient tear production or excessive tear evaporation, which compromises the lubrication of the ocular surface. The tear film consists of three essential layers: the oil layer, the aqueous (water) layer, and the mucin layer.
Additional risk factors include prolonged use of contact lenses, extended periods of reading or screen use, pregnancy, and vitamin A deficiency. Furthermore, chronic consumption of specific medications — such as decongestants, antihistamines, antidepressants, cold treatments, diuretics, hypnotics, antihypertensive agents, glaucoma medications, analgesics, and alcohol — may exacerbate this condition.
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Therapy
IPL therapy employs high-intensity pulsed light to stimulate the meibomian glands located in the eyelids. This stimulation promotes the release and quality improvement of the lipid (oil) layer of the tear film, which is critical for maintaining ocular surface moisture.
- Effective clearance of clogged meibomian glands, facilitating improved oil secretion
- Enhanced tear film stability
- Improved meibomian gland function
